  • WORLD EARTH DAY CELEBRATED IN GIBRALTAR TOO

World Earth Day is fast approaching. On the 22nd April there will millions of people around the world joining together in actions to celebrate our Earth and to call for greater responsibility in protecting our environment. This year, the events’ co-ordinators have chosen “Healthy Environments for Children”…what could be more important?

On World Earth Day, the ESG will be endorsing the Earth Charter already supported by over two thousand organisations worldwide.

This charter was approved in 2000 by the “United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development” and focuses on 4 broad commitments which are:

    1. Respect life in all its diversity
    2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion, and love
    3. Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable, and peaceful
    4. Secure Earth’s bounty and beauty for present and future generations

On Earth Day, the ESG considers it highly relevant to endorse the Earth Charter and to invite others to do the same. It details fundamental principles that must be adopted by our generation to meet sustainable development.

The document describes this point in time now as ….” a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life”. Let us hope this optimistic view can be realised for our sakes and for future generations.
